While entering the serial port name into the code in arduino IDE, enter the whole port address i.e: /dev/cu.usbmodem. or /dev/cu.UG-. where the. is the port number. And for the port number in case of mac just open terminal and type. Ls /dev/. and then search for the port that u have set in arduino IDE. Once you’ve determined which device you would like to use, you can execute the SCREEN command to start the serial terminal session on your Mac. Remember to specify the speed (baud rate) after the device name. Screen /dev/tty.usbserial-FTT3JMUZ 9600. Once you’ve connected, you can use the terminal as you normally would.
In a previous post Serial Console on OS X I wrote about how to connect a USB-Serial converter to console into Cisco router and use the ‘screen’ command.

Os X Serial Port Terminal Connector

To perform a password recovery on a Cisco router you need to issue a “terminal break” character to interrupt the boot process. The Cisco page on terminal break shows a lot of break sequences.
The break sequence for “screen” is to use Ctrl-A and then Ctrl-B. The Ctrl-A shifts the focus back to the screen process (away from the serial console) and the Ctrl-B issues the break sequence.
Os X Serial Port Terminals
You may need to break more than once. This is done by Ctrl-A, Ctrl-B, Ctrl-B, Ctrl-B.
