Macquarie Island is an exposed portion of the Macquarie Ridge, and is located where the Australian plate meets the Pacific plate. It is the only place in the world where rocks from the mantle are actively exposed at sea level. Due to this it was made a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997. Biologist Ronald Kenny at work on one of his specimens, a large red deepsea crab. Collecting and tabulating specimens for future study by specialists is part of his work on the island. A balloon with a small radio transmitter attached is released daily, weather permitting, to record upper.

Profile

Rebecca Giggs' creative and scholarly writing focuses on themes of ecology and environmental imagination, animals, landscape, the uncanny, politics and memory. Her particular interests lie in the genres of the essay, nonfiction writing and ficto-criticism. She is a former board member of the Fremantle Press, and has been a recipient of numerous grants and residencies-including a 2013/2014 AsiaLink residency hosted by the Association for the Study of Environmental Literature, Japan.
